In 1957 he made his debut as a poet with Stemmen uit Afrika (Voices From Africa). He then published three volumes of poetry in Papiamento, the native tongue of The Netherlands Antilles. His first novel was the much acclaimed Dubbelspel (1973, Double Play) which, as well as his other prose, deals with the emancipation of the Antillean culture and expresses his criticism of (neo)colonialism. |
