| biography:
| Photographer and gallery director, born in Lexington, Kentucky, USA. Inspired by Ansel Adams, he left his business, Van Deren Hardware (1946–55) to pursue a career in the arts, earning a MFA from Indiana University (1958). His photographs won prizes in international competitions (1955–60) and he taught at Harvard, Arizona, and New Mexico State universities. He became director of the photography department at San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (1979–87) |
