| Writer of biography, history, and travel, born in Sydney, New South Wales, SE Australia. His early life was one of travel and adventure at sea. He served with the Australian Imperial Forces in World War 1, and was wounded at Gallipoli. At the age of 40 he decided to write the story of his early years, published as Try Anything Once (1933). He wrote over 60 books, often in collaboration with P R (‘Inky’) Stephensen, and was one of Australia's best-selling writers. Stories such as Ben Hall the Bushranger (1947), and Wild Colonial Boys (1948) aroused interest in Australian history. |
