| Electrical engineer, born in Pasadena, California, USA. In 1904 he began working for American Telephone & Telegraph Co as an electrical engineer, later working under John J Carty, and played a major role in transcontinental telephone transmission. He founded the Bell Telephone Laboratories (1925) where he was president (1925–40) and chairman of the board (1940–9). |
