| biography:
| Novelist, born in Paris, France. Educated privately, at the age of 18 she wrote, in only four weeks, the best-selling Bonjour tristesse (1954, Good Morning Sadness), followed by Un Certain Sourire (1956, A Certain Smile). Both novels are direct testaments of adolescent wisdom and precocity, written with the economy of a remarkable literary style. Her many later novels, including Aimez-vous Brahms? (1959, Do You Like Brahms?, filmed in 1961 as Goodbye Again), have had a mixed critical reception. She has also written several plays, and a ballet, La Chamade (1966). In 1993 appeared Oeuvres, a volume of collected works. |
