| French soldier and statesman, born in Harouel, NE France. Promoted to the rank of Marshal of France in 1622, he later served as ambassador to Switzerland, Spain, and England, but he was implicated in an unsuccessful plot to overthrow Cardinal Richelieu, and was imprisoned in the Bastille (1631–43). His Memoirs, written in the Bastille, are an important source for contemporary history. |
