Under the influence of the Enlightenment, he expressed his ideas on the human condition, thereby exercising his influence on foreign thinkers such as Novalis and Friedrich Schlegel. He is generally regarded as one of the first Dutch thinkers to respond to the ideas of the Enlightenment, functioning as a pioneer for Romanticism in The Netherlands. |
