| Composer, born in Rouen, NW France. His opera Le Calife de Bagdad (1800, The Caliph of Baghdad), which was performed in Paris, brought him acclaim. He conducted at St Petersburg (1803–10) and on his return produced his two masterpieces, Jean de Paris (1812) and La Dame blanche (1825, The White Lady). |
