| biography:
| Dutch Protestant theologian, born in Bruges, NW Belgium. He studied at Oxford, Cambridge, and Heidelberg, became professor in Leyden (1594) and worked on a translation of the Old Testament. He was a strong believer in predestination. His great opponent was Arminius, who led the more liberal Remonstrants. Gomarus led the Counter-Remonstrants, and at the Synod of Dordt (1618) was successful in driving the Remonstrants officially out of the church, in some cases into exile. From then until his death he was professor at Groningen. |
