| biography:
| Playwright and novelist, born in Sevilla, SW Spain. Papal notary at the Court of Madrid, and friend of Lope de Vega, his Flor de sainetes (1640) printed his entremeses and two short novels, El caballero invisible and Los dos hermanos, the latter written as an exercise in avoiding the vowel a. He also wrote La carroza con las damas without using the letter e; La perla de Portugal without using i; La peregrina hermitaña without o and La serrana de Cintia without u. The two short novels by Navarrete were reprinted in Vol. 33 (1854) of the Biblioteca de Autores Españoles. He wrote another sainete, La casa de juego (1646), to expose the card-sharpers and confidence tricksters operating in the gambling dens of the time. |
