| Architect, born in Spain. A disciple and successor of Juan de Herrera, he was known for his elegant and plastic surfaces, which distinguished his work from the density of architectural forms of his master. His principal work is the design and construction of the city of Lerma (1604–14), the antithesis of construction by Herrera, that was commissioned by of the Duke of Lerma. His final projects were the Palacio de Uceda (Madrid, now the Palacio de los Consejos) and the Carmelite Church of San José, Avila. |
