| biography:
| Philosopher and theologian, born in Granada, S Spain. He entered the Society of Jesus in 1564, and was ordained in 1572. He taught philosophy in Segovia (1572–4), then theology at Valladolid, Alcalá, Salamanca, and Coimbra, and is often rated as the greatest of scholastic philosophers after Aquinas. His main works were the Disputationes metaphysicae (1597, Metaphysical Disputations), the Tractatus de legibus ac Deo legislatore (1612, Treatise on Law and on God the Law-giver) which foreshadows the modern doctrine of international law, and the Defensio fidei Catholicae (1613, Defence of the Catholic Faith) condemning the divine-right theories of kingship of James VI and I. The complete Latin edition of his works is in 26 volumes (1856–61). |
