| Painter, born in Castellón de la Plana, E Spain. He studied in Rome, and settled in Valencia under the patronage of the archbishop, Juan de Ribera. A major influence on later Spanish painters, he was the first Spanish tenebroso - a painter who emphasizes darkness rather than light. His works include ‘The Last Supper’ and ‘Christ Embracing St Bernard’ (Prado, Madrid). |
