| biography:
| Historian, essayist, and president of the First Republic (1873–4), born in Barcelona, NE Spain. His major work Historia de España en el siglo XIX (7 vols of 8, 1902), was edited and partly written by his son, Francisco Pi y Arsuaga, from materials that his father had assembled. His other studies included Historia de la pintura en España (1851), Estudios sobre la Edad media (1873), Las nacionalidades (1876), Joyas literarias (1876), and Observaciones sobre el carácter de Don Juan Tenorio (1884). He also wrote an ‘ensayo dramático’ entitled Rebelión (1897). La República de 1873 (1874) outlined his policy and actions while in office. |
