| biography:
| Historian, born in Jerez, S Spain. He was the secretary appointed by Pizarro to chronicle the conquest of Peru. He accompanied Pizarro on his first journeys to Peru, in 1524 and 1526, and enlisted with him again in 1530, and thus observed at first hand all the events he describes. His Verdadera relación de la conquista del Perú y provincia del Cuzco llamada la Nueva Castilla (1534) is the most detailed, precise, and objective of all the early histories of Peru and thus, despite its comparative brevity, remained useful to scholars for a long time. He avoids speaking of himself and of his companions, so that his work has the tone of an official report, in total contrast to the more subjective impressions of Bernal Díaz del Castillo. |
