| biography:
| Revolutionary and president of Mexico (1911–13), born in Parras, C Mexico. He studied at the University of California at Berkeley, unsuccessfully opposed Porfirio Díaz's local candidates in 1904, and in 1908 published La sucesión presidencial en 1910 (The Presidential Succession in 1910), which launched his presidential campaign. His popularity grew rapidly, and Díaz imprisoned him and many of his supporters. He escaped to the USA in 1910, led a military campaign that captured Ciudad Juarez, and the dictatorship crumbled. Once elected president, he faced a succession of revolts, and in 1913 he and his vice-president were murdered following a military coup led by General Victoriano Huerta. |
