| biography:
| Painter, born in Seville, SW Spain, the son and pupil of Francisco Herrera (the Elder). He worked in Rome, and in 1656 moved back to Seville, where he helped to found the Academy. In 1661 he went to Spain, and became painter to Philip IV in Madrid. His best works are a fresco, ‘The Ascension’, in the Atocha Church in Madrid, and ‘St Francis’, in Seville Cathedral. |
