biography: Folklorist, botanist, and poet, born in Biniamar, Mallorca, Spain. His native village, at the foot of the N cordillera of Mallorca, gave him a love of nature and led him to a study of botany. He joined the Congregación de Misioneros de los Sagrados Corazones de Mallorca (1925) and was ordained a priest (1934). He taught literature and natural science for 27 years in the Congregation's school at Sóller. From 1960 he intensified his botanical labours, which culminated in Flora de Mallorca (4 vols, 1977–80), much used in European universities.
