| Poet and critic, born in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, E England, UK. He studied at Oxford, and after a variety of posts in education and administration became professor of poetry there (1886–95). He is best kown as the editor of the Golden Treasury of Songs and Lyrical Poems (1861; second series, 1896), known to generations of schoolchildren as ‘Palgrave's Golden Treasury’. |
