| biography:
| Priest and humorous writer, born in Cork, Co Cork, S Ireland. He became a Jesuit priest, but was expelled from the order for a late-night frolic, and was ordained a priest at Lucca in 1832. He moved to London in 1834, forsook his calling for journalism and poetry, and contributed to Fraser's Magazine and Bentley's Miscellany. He is remembered as author of the poems ‘The Bells of Shandon’ and ‘The Lady of Lee’. |
