| Poet, born in Montpellier, S France. He was involved with the Surrealists for a short time, joined the Communist party in 1937, and was literary and art editor of the party's weekly Action (1944–6). He left the party in 1947 to concentrate on writing and teaching. His best-known works are Le Parti pris des choses (1942) and the lengthy poem ‘Le Savon’. His work was mainly in the form of prose poems about everyday objects, using word association and typography to achieve his aims. |
