| biography:
| Catholic chaplain, born in Ontario, Canada. A progressive-minded theology professor at St Joseph's Seminary in Yonkers, New York (1898–1912), and long-serving New York City pastor, he earned fame for heroism in World War 1 as chaplain in France to the 69th Regiment of the New York National Guard. A memorial to him was erected in New York's Times Square. |
