| biography:
| Emperor of Austria (1848–1916) and king of Hungary (1867–1916), born near Vienna, the grandson of Emperor Francis I. During his reign the aspirations of the various nationalities of the empire were rigorously suppressed. He was defeated by the Prussians in 1866, and established the Dual Monarchy of Austria–Hungary in 1867. His annexation of Bosnia-Herzegovina in 1908 agitated Europe; and his attack on Serbia in 1914 precipitated World War 1. |
