| US representative and senator, born in Everly, Iowa, USA. He settled in South Dakota in 1922 to work as a newspaper editor and then owner. He was elected to the US House of Representatives (Republican, South Dakota, 1937–51) and to the US Senate (1951–62). Primarily interested in domestic issues, such as water conservation and farm surplus programmes, he initiated the Renegotiation Act of 1942 which was intended to recover excessive defence contract profits. |
