| biography:
| Teacher of the deaf, born in Raleigh, North Carolina, USA. He served in the Confederate navy as a teenager, and trained as an engineer while teaching at the New York Institution for the Deaf. As superintendent of Arkansas Institute for the Deaf (1885–92) and Michigan State School for the Deaf (1892–1913), he expanded the two institutions and revised their curricula. |
