| Catholic prelate, born on Prince Edward Island, Canada. A small-town pastor in Michigan and a chaplain in the Spanish American War, he founded the Catholic Church Extension Society (1905) to introduce and maintain Catholicism in far-flung rural areas of the USA. He led the society until being named Bishop of Oklahoma in 1924. He was made a monsignor in 1915. |
