| Goldsmith and painter, born in Bologna, N Italy. He achieved fame as a craftsman in metal, in niello, and designed the first italic type for Aldus Manutius. As a painter in oils or in fresco he is particularly noted for his madonnas. His sons, Giacomo (c.1486–1557) and Giulio (1487–1543), were also painters. |
