| biography:
| Painter, sculptor, and architect, born in Siena, C Italy. Most of his paintings were executed in his early career, and he is now best known as an architect and architectural theorist, and author of Trattato di architettura civile e militare, a discussion of city planning. By 1477 he was working in Urbino where, as a military engineer, he designed the city's fortifications and, it is generally accepted, exploded the first land-mine in 1495 at a siege of Naples. |
