| Italian politician, born in Milan, Lombardy, N Italy. He became plenipotentiary of the Cisalpine Republic, then vice-president of the Italian Republic (1802). He implemented a large number of reforms, but his support for constitutional monarchy eventually cost him Napoleon's confidence, and he lost political significance. |
