| biography:
| King of the Two Sicilies, born in Naples, SW Campania, Italy. The son of Ferdinand II and Maria Cristina of Savoy, he inherited the throne in 1859. A weak character, he failed to take the country out of its political stagnation. Garibaldi's landing forced him to grant a constitution, but he was unable to stop the collapse of the kingdom. He escaped to Rome, where he lived until 1870, and then to Paris. |
