| Fourth Marquis of Mantua, born in Mantua, Lombardy, N Italy. He joined other Italian princes in the league formed to stop Charles VIII's advance, and was in charge of the forces that clashed with the French at Fornovo (1495). Later on, he served Louis XII and then Pope Julius II, for whom he conquered Bologna. He joined the League of Cambrai, and was captured by the Venetians and freed by Julius II. The French victory at Marignano in 1515 lost him Asola and Lonato. |
