| Italian statesman and prime minister (1887–90, 1893–6), born in Ribera, Sicily, S Italy. He was called to the bar but, joining the revolutionary movement of 1848, had to flee to France. He organized the successful movement of 1859–60, and re-entered Sicily with Garibaldi. In the restored Kingdom of Italy he became deputy, president of the chamber, minister, and premier. A deputy of the left in 1861, in 1864 he lent his support to the monarchy and became increasingly authoritarian and nationalistic. He supressed irredentism and socialism. A supporter of Italian expansion in Ethiopia, he gave up politics after the Italian defeat at Adua. |
