| biography:
| Catalan poet, born in Tortosa, E Spain. One of the most skilful sonneteers of his day, he was stylistically a very careful imitator of the conceits of Góngora and Quevedo, but frequently lacked their taste or finish. The unnatural syntax is unhappily accompanied by often inappropriate Castilianisms. The Obras de Garceni (Vallfogona's bucolic name) was published in Barcelona, not in 1700 as stated but almost certainly in 1703. The burlesque obscenities caused some difficulties with the Inquisition, the new edition of 1770 being banned in 1782. The 1703 edition was reprinted in 1805 and 1820, and that of 1830 incorporates four new pieces. |
