| Physiologist and physician, born in Bordeaux, SW France. As professor of anatomy in the Collège de France (1831), he studied nerve physiology and the veins, and was the first to experiment on hypersensitivity to foreign substances (anaphylaxis). His research demonstrated the functional differences in the spinal nerves, and the effects of drugs on the body. |
