| biography:
| Composer, born in Berlin, Germany. He studied in Berlin and Paris, and moved to the USA in 1937. He first attracted attention with his cantata, The Prairie (1941), and has since written two symphonies, concertos, chamber music, and operas. He was appointed professor of music at the University of California in 1953, and in 1981 became director of the Milwaukee Symphony Orchestra. |
