He pioneered a new technique in high jumping which revolutionized this event after he won the Olympic gold medal at Mexico City in 1968 with a jump of 2·24 m (7 ft 4 in), using what came to be known as the Fosbury Flop, where the bar is jumped head-first and backwards. |
