| biography:
| Dutch diplomat, born in Midlum, N Netherlands. At first in the Brunswick service, in 1617 he was appointed Resident to the Hansa towns by the States-General. He successfully promoted Dutch interests, and in 1629 negotiated the neutrality of the Emperor Maximilian in the war against Spain. In 1635–7 he was in Vienna, where he became a Catholic and negotiated peace between the Emperor Ferdinand II and Sweden. This displeased the States-General, who recalled him, but he ignored the summons. There was some suggestion that the Stadtholder Frederick Henry was also involved in the Swedish/imperial agreement. |
