| Early Dutch ruler, the eldest son of Dirk VI, who succeeded him as Count of Holland in 1157. In 1162 he married Ada, sister of the king of Scotland. After campaigning with Frederick Barbarossa in Italy, he signed the Treaty of Bruges between Holland and Flanders in 1167, giving joint administration of the disputed land W of the Scheldt to both counts, and ensuring comparatively peaceful relations for the next century. In 1180 he fought against the West Frisians. While on the Third Crusade (1189–92) he distinguished himself in the capture of Iconium, and died in 1190 in Antioch. |
