| biography:
| Historian, born in Zamora, NWC Spain. He studied under Nebrija at Alaclá de Henares (1509–14), and is best known for his edition of the Tercera crónica general of Alfonso ‘el sabio’ entitled Las quatro partes enteras de la crónica de España (1541), reprinted frequently, and as late as 1604. Less successful was Ocampo's Los quatro libros primeros de la crónica general de España (1543, revised 1553), a work more ambitious than its title suggests. It includes a survey of world history until Roman times, and uncritically mingles historical facts and legends with Ocampo's own inventions, as well as an unsubtle attempt to prove the antiquity of Spain's ruling Habsburg dynasty. |
