| biography:
| Businessman and mayor, born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA. After serving as a Democratic state senator and representative (1895–1901), and running a newspaper, he became the colourful, popular Mayor of Boston (1906–8, 1910–14). His administrations were plagued by charges of corruption and political patronage, and a subsequent attempt to be elected as governor and senator failed. He was the grandfather of John, Robert, and Edward Kennedy. |
