| Writer, born in Cork, Ireland. Seeking money and adventure, he emigrated to New York City (1852), where he continued his work as a journalist and freelance writer, producing poetry, short stories, and plays. He is best known for his macabre horror stories, as in ‘The Diamond Lens’, first published in the Atlantic Monthly (1858). Volunteering for service in the Union army in the Civil War, he was wounded and died of tetanus. |
