| biography:
| Northern Ireland politician, born in Belfast, NE Northern Ireland, UK. He was a merchant seaman (1941–53) before entering local politics (1958–81), becoming a Republican Labour MP (1966). He founded and led the Social Democratic and Labour Party (1970–9), until he resigned the leadership to sit as an Independent Socialist. He lost his Westminster seat in 1983 when he received his peerage. He had earlier been a member of the Northern Ireland Executive (1973–5), and was its deputy chief executive in 1974. |
