| The greatest of Persian poets, born near Tús, Khorassan. His major work was the epic poem, Shah Náma (1010, The Book of Kings), based on actual events from the annals of Persia. One episode from this epic inspired Matthew Arnold's poem, Sohrab and Rustum (1853). He also wrote a number of shorter pieces. |
