| biography:
| Painter, born in Strýta, Iceland. He went to study in Copenhagen and discovered a vocation for painting (1921). He joined the Modernist group at Der Sturm gallery, Berlin, and Dresden, where he was much influenced by Oskar Kokoschka. Returning to Iceland he held the first exhibition of abstract art in Reykjavík (1925), causing something of a scandal, and thereafter worked in more traditional styles, painting landscapes and scenes from fishing life. His later paintings showed a return towards abstraction. |
