| Architect, born in Messina, Sicily, S Italy. He studied under Carlo Fontana in Rome (1703–14), and received several commissions for stage designs. Appointed architect to the King of Sicily (1714), he moved to Turin and took charge of its rebuilding and enlargement. Influenced by the Roman Baroque, Bernini, and French planning, his major works include the Palazzo Madama (1718–21), the royal hunting lodge at Stupinigi, outside Turin (1729), and the Church of the Carmine (1732). |
