| Politician, born in Pisa, Tuscany, W Italy. A sympathizer of the French Revolution, he was exiled to Corsica and became a French citizen in 1793. In 1795 he was sent to Italy as a revolutionary agent and arrested. With Babeuf, whom he had met in jail, he organized the ‘plot of the equals’ (1796) which failed. In Geneva he founded a secret society, the ‘Filadelfi’ (1805), and in Italy a number of secret societies that led him to clash with Mazzini. |
