| Footballer, born in Lisbon, Portugal. He joined Sporting Lisbon at 11, making his debut with the club's first team in 1989 aged 16. In 1996 he moved to Barcelona for £1·4 million, where coach Johan Cruyff turned the midfielder into a right winger. He was soon hailed as one of the world's best forwards. His honours with Barcelona include the Cup Winners's Cup (1997), consecutive Spanish League titles (1998, 1999), and the Spanish Cup (1997, 1998). He signed a 6-year contract for Real Madrid in 2000 for £40 million, guaranteeing himself earnings of more than £27 million a year. He was named European Footballer of the Year in 2000 and FIFA World Player of the Year in 2001. He was named as a member of Portugal's World Cup squad for 2002. |
