| Singer and variety star, born in Rochdale, Greater Manchester, NW England, UK. She first appeared on stage at the age of 10, made her London debut in 1915, and by 1928 was firmly established in variety. With her sentimental songs and broad Lancashire humour, she won a unique place in the affections of British audiences. Her theme tune, ‘Sally’, she first sang in 1931. She was created a dame in 1978. |
