| biography:
| Galician architect in the Baroque style, born in Santiago de Compostela, La Coruña, NW Spain. He continued the work of Domingo Antonio de Andrade, especially in Santiago de Compostela during the first half of the 18th-c. In 1708 he worked with Fray Gabriel on the Cathedral of Lugo, assuming responsibility for the design of the cloister. In 1711 he was named master of works for the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela, for which he built the chapel of the Virgen del Pilar begun by Domingo de Andrade. His chief works include the facade of the Obradoiro in the cathedral of Santiago, designed to protect the old ‘Gloria’ gate which was in a ruinous state, and the construction, on one of the sides of the facade, of an identical tower to that built in the 17th-c by José Peña de Toro and Domingo de Andrade. |
