| Historian, born in Lorraine, NE France. He studied at the Sorbonne, and taught in Algerian schools (1923–32), in Paris (1932–5), and at Saõ Paulo University (1935–8). He wrote, from memory, his great work La Mediterranée et le monde mediterranéen à l'époque de Philippe II (The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World at the Time of Philip II) in a German prison camp in Lübeck throughout World War 2, after which it was published (1949). He then became professor at the Collège de France (1949–72). |
